The 8-day Lemosho Route is the ultimate Kilimanjaro trek with the highest summit success rate (~98%). Starting from the pristine western rainforest, you traverse the Shira Plateau over two days for superior acclimatization, acclimatize via Lava Tower, conquer the Barranco Wall, and summit via Stella Point — the gold standard for a safe, scenic, and successful climb.
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the best overall route on Mount Kilimanjaro. This 8-day itinerary is the gold standard, providing the most gradual ascent profile and the highest summit success rate of any route — approximately 98%. Starting from the pristine western rainforest, you traverse the Shira Plateau over two days for superior acclimatization, acclimatize via Lava Tower, conquer the Barranco Wall, and summit via Stella Point.
Unlike the more crowded southern routes, Lemosho begins in remote wilderness where you're likely to encounter colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and even elephant tracks. The extra day on the Shira Plateau (Day 3) allows your body to adjust gradually to altitude, making the 8-day version the safest and most successful way to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
The key difference between the 7-day and 8-day Lemosho is the extra day on the Shira Plateau (Day 3). While the 7-day version crosses the plateau in one long day, the 8-day version splits it into two shorter, more manageable days. This allows your body an additional day to acclimatize at moderate altitude (3,610m to 3,850m) before the critical Lava Tower day. The result is a ~98% summit success rate — the highest of any route on Kilimanjaro.
The 8-day Lemosho follows the same spectacular path as the 7-day but with a more gradual ascent profile. Starting from the Londorossi Gate, you trek through pristine montane rainforest, cross the massive Shira Ridge into the otherworldly moorland, acclimatize at Lava Tower, conquer the Barranco Wall, and finally push through glacial scree to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.

Registration at Londorossi Gate, then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. You begin your trek through lush pristine rainforest, where Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys are frequently spotted in the canopy. The trail winds through dense vegetation draped with moss and epiphytes. You climb steadily for 3-4 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, named after the ancient giant trees in the area.
Today you leave the rainforest zone behind and trek across the massive Shira Ridge into the moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically — open grassy moorland with heather scattered with volcanic rock formations replaces the dense forest. You climb steadily through the heath zone, gaining significant altitude. As you traverse the Shira Ridge, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds.
A shorter acclimatization day crossing the vast Shira Plateau. You trek across the plateau with stunning views of the Northern Ice Fields from the western side of the mountain. The landscape is otherworldly — giant groundsels and lobelias create an almost prehistoric atmosphere. In the afternoon, you take an optional acclimatization walk up to around 4,000m before descending back to camp. This extra day on the plateau is what makes the 8-day version superior.
This is the essential acclimatization day. You trek east towards the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic rock formation, with far-reaching panoramic views as you ascend into the climatic zone of the upland desert. You reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower for lunch — the high point for the day. In the afternoon, you make a steep descent into the scenic Barranco Valley, following the mountaineering code of "Climb High, Sleep Low" to aid acclimatization.
The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall scramble — a steep but non-technical rock climb requiring you to use your hands for balance. It's a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, you head towards the Karanga valley. For those feeling strong, there is an optional mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4,200m before descending back to camp.
After a good night's rest and breakfast, you set off on your walk to Barafu camp at 4,673m. The climb will take you across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It's a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arrival at camp you eat and spend the afternoon resting as you prepare for the summit push. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, and the camp sits on a narrow ridge with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak.
You wake at midnight and begin the summit push under a sky full of stars. The climb is steep and demanding — loose scree and cold temperatures test your endurance. After 5-6 hours you reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, where you witness a breathtaking African sunrise with spectacular ice cliffs within the crater. The final hour along the crater rim takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
Your final day is a pleasant descent through beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and takes you through lush vegetation back to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Here you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate — a proud memento of your achievement. Your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi where you can celebrate with your fellow climbers.
