Overview

The Marangu Route, affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route", is Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established trail. It is the only route offering comfortable A-frame hut accommodation — sleeping on mattresses in wooden cabins with beds, making it ideal for trekkers who prefer shelter from the harsh mountain elements.

The 6-day version is strongly recommended over the 5-day option. The extra day provides a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you hike up towards Mawenzi Ridge (4,390m) following the "Climb High, Sleep Low" principle. This dramatically increases your summit success rate to approximately 90%, compared to just 60-65% for the 5-day version.

Why Choose the 6-Day Marangu Route

  • Only route with hut accommodation — no camping needed
  • Extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut — ~90% success rate
  • Well-established trail with facilities and infrastructure
  • Most comfortable option — beds, mattresses, shelter
  • Classic "Coca-Cola Route" — the most iconic Kilimanjaro path
  • Great for beginners and budget-conscious trekkers
  • Group joining from $1,750 — the classic Kilimanjaro experience

The Marangu Experience

Starting from the Marangu Gate on the southeastern side, you trek through dense tropical rainforest alive with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vibrant birdlife. The trail is well-maintained and relatively gentle — the most established path on the mountain. As you ascend, the landscape transitions through heath and moorland before reaching the stark alpine desert of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The hut accommodation is a unique feature — you'll sleep in A-frame wooden cabins with beds and mattresses at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts. This eliminates the need for camping equipment and provides shelter from rain, wind, and cold temperatures.
