Overview

The Machame Route, affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route", is Kilimanjaro's most popular and scenically diverse trail. This 7-day itinerary is the optimal version, providing an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp that dramatically improves your summit chances to approximately 93%.

The route is named "Whiskey Route" because its challenging nature "warms you up" like a shot of whiskey — not because alcohol is consumed on the mountain. The 7-day version follows the same spectacular path as the 6-day but with a more gradual ascent profile, making it the recommended choice for trekkers who want the best balance of challenge and safety.

Why Choose the 7-Day Machame Route

  • Extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp — superior to the 6-day version
  • Famous Barranco Wall scramble — the most exciting section on Kilimanjaro
  • Lava Tower acclimatization (4,630m) — "Climb High, Sleep Low" profile
  • Five ecological zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, Arctic summit
  • ~93% summit success rate — one of the highest of any route
  • Group joining departures from $1,950 — share the adventure with fellow climbers

The 7-Day Advantage

The key difference between the 6-day and 7-day Machame is the extra day at Karanga Camp. This allows your body an additional day to acclimatize before the final ascent to Barafu Camp and the summit push. The "Climb High, Sleep Low" principle is applied twice — once at Lava Tower (4,630m) on Day 3, and again during the Barranco Wall traverse on Day 4.

Starting from the southern base of Kilimanjaro, you'll climb through dense montane rainforest alive with colobus monkeys, traverse open moorland with giant groundsels and lobelias, cross stark alpine desert, and finally push through glacial scree to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.

Day by Day Itinerary

The 7-day Machame Route includes an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, giving you the best chance of summiting. Each day follows the "Climb High, Sleep Low" principle through five ecological zones.

Day 0

Arrival in Tanzania

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a briefing and equipment check.

Driving: 55km · 1 hr Hotel in Moshi
Day 1

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,010m)

You will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and driven to the Machame Gate (1,800m). After completing park registrations, you begin your trek through dense, lush rainforest. The trail is often wet and muddy underfoot, winding through towering trees draped with moss. Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys are frequently spotted in the canopy. You climb steadily for 5-7 hours to reach Machame Camp (3,010m) situated in a clearing in the forest.

11km 5-7 hours 1,800m → 3,010m Rainforest
Day 2

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,010m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Today you leave the forest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail climbs steeply through heath vegetation with stunning views opening up behind you. You will see the vast Shira Plateau stretching out before you, with Kibo Peak looming in the distance. Looking back, you will be able to see Mt Meru rising high above Arusha City. The landscape is dramatic — giant groundsels, lobelias, and heather create an almost alien environment. After 4-6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) on the edge of the Shira Plateau.

5km 4-6 hours 3,010m → 3,840m Moorland
Day 3

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) via Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m) — Key Acclimatization Day

This is the critical acclimatization day. You trek east towards the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic rock formation. The "Climb High, Sleep Low" principle is applied today — you ascend to the Lava Tower for lunch, spending time at altitude, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m) for the night. The terrain transitions from moorland to barren alpine desert with spectacular views of the Western Breach glaciers. Following the mountaineering code of "walk high, sleep low", this day is essential for your body to adjust to altitude and dramatically improves your summit chances.

10km 6-8 hours 3,840m → 4,630m → 3,960m Alpine Desert
Day 4

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

The day starts with the exciting Barranco Wall scramble — a steep but non-technical rock climb requiring you to use your hands for balance. It is thrilling and rewarding, offering spectacular views of the glaciers above. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. After the wall, you traverse open slopes with views of Kibo and the Southern Ice Fields. This extra acclimatization day is what makes the 7-day Machame superior to the 6-day version. You arrive at Karanga Camp (3,995m) for the night.

5km 4-5 hours 3,960m → 3,995m Alpine Desert
Day 5

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

After a good night's rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4,673m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It's a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arrival at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for the summit push. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, and the camp sits on a narrow ridge with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak.

4km 3-4 hours 3,995m → 4,673m Alpine Desert / Scree
Day 6

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Down to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

You wake at midnight and begin the summit push under a sky full of stars. The climb is steep and demanding — loose scree and cold temperatures test your endurance. After 5-6 hours you reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, where you witness a breathtaking African sunrise. The final hour along the crater rim takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final night on the mountain.

17km total 11-15 hours 4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m Arctic Summit / Scree / Rainforest
Day 7

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) — Departure Day

Your final day is a pleasant descent through beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and takes you through lush vegetation back to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Here you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate — a proud memento of your achievement. Your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi where you can celebrate with your fellow climbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Machame Route.

Yes! The 6-day Machame is achievable for fit trekkers. It includes the essential Lava Tower acclimatization day (Day 3) and follows the same trail as the 7-day version, just with one fewer rest day. We recommend the 7-day version for those new to high altitude.
The name "Whiskey Route" comes from the challenging nature of the trek that "warms you up" like a shot of whiskey. It is NOT because alcohol is consumed on the mountain — our guides maintain strict safety protocols.
The 6-day Machame has approximately a 90% summit success rate. The Lava Tower acclimatization on Day 3 is critical for your chances. Choosing an experienced operator like Bush Lion Tours with WFR-certified guides further improves your odds.
The Barranco Wall is a fun scrambling section — not technical climbing. It requires using your hands for balance on steep rock but no climbing experience is needed. Most trekkers find it the most exciting and memorable part of the trek.
The 6-day version combines some sections and has one fewer acclimatization day. The 7-day version adds a rest/acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, which improves summit chances for less experienced trekkers. Both follow the same general route.
You will pass through five distinct zones: lush rainforest (Day 1), heath and moorland (Day 2), alpine desert with Lava Tower (Day 3), the Barranco Wall scramble (Day 4), and glacial scree to the summit (Day 5). The descent on Day 6 is through rainforest.
