Mawenzi & Uhuru Route Overview

This unique route combines the ascent of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m) with the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). It is a technical route that requires mountaineering experience and is suitable only for very experienced trekkers.

The route offers spectacular views and a truly unique Kilimanjaro experience that few trekkers get to enjoy.

Baggage Limits on Mawenzi & Uhuru Route

Maximum 8kg personal + 15kg porters. All excess equipment will be left at the hotel in Moshi and returned after your climb.

Each day is designed for optimal acclimatization on the Mawenzi & Uhuru Route.

Day 0

Arrival in Tanzania

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a briefing and equipment check.

Day 1

Arrive in Kilimanjaro

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Your guide will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check.

Day 2

Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,720m)

Drive to Marangu Gate and begin trekking through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut. The trail is well-maintained and relatively gentle.

Day 3

Mandara Hut (2,720m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Trek through rainforest that transitions into moorland. The vegetation becomes more sparse and the views open up.

Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Mawenzi Hut (4,330m)

Trek towards Mawenzi Hut, the base for climbing Mawenzi Peak (5,149m). This is a technical climb that requires climbing equipment. The hut is located in a sheltered area with dramatic views.

Day 5

Mawenzi Peak (5,149m) Ascent & Descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Early morning ascent of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m), the second highest peak on Kilimanjaro. This is a technical climb requiring ropes and harnesses. After reaching the summit, descend back to Horombo Hut.

Day 6

Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Trek through alpine desert towards the Kibo Hut for the Uhuru Peak summit attempt.

Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m)

Summit attempt at midnight. Trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point. Descend to Mweka Gate through rainforest. Receive certificates.

Descent to Moshi

The trekking distance is 70km (43 miles) completed over 7 or 8 days, with an average daily altitude gain of about 500m.
