Unlike all other routes that approach from the south or west, the Northern Circuit traverses the remote northern slopes — the least visited part of the mountain. Here you'll experience true wilderness solitude, with views extending across the Kenyan plains and rarely seeing other trekkers. The route starts from the western Lemosho Glades, crosses the Shira Plateau, then circles around the north before joining the Rongai route for the final summit push.
Starting from the Londorossi Gate on the western side, you trek through pristine montane rainforest alive with colobus monkeys. As you climb, the landscape transforms dramatically — crossing the massive Shira Ridge into the otherworldly moorland of the Shira Plateau. Instead of heading south like other routes, you diverge north towards the secluded Moir Hut, beginning the circuit around the mountain.
The northern slopes offer a level of solitude unmatched by any other route. You'll traverse remote alpine valleys and ridges, with views extending across the Kenyan plains. The final approach joins the Rongai route for the summit push, ascending from the northeast — a perspective very few Kilimanjaro climbers ever see.

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a briefing and equipment check.
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration. Short transfer to the trail head at Lemosho Glades. Steady climb through lush montane rainforest to Big Tree Camp. Spot colobus monkeys and exotic bird species along the trail. Camp in a clearing in the forest.
Ascend out of the forest canopy into rolling heather moorland and cross several streams. Trek across the outer rim of the Shira Plateau to Shira 1 Camp, enjoying the first spectacular views of Kibo Peak. The vegetation becomes more sparse as you enter the expansive moorland zone.
A gentle trek across the high-altitude Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. This day offers crucial acclimatization. Take an afternoon walk towards the Western Breach to admire the panoramic vistas across the Shira Caldera. The terrain is relatively flat with stunning panoramic views.
Trek east towards Kibo, ascending to the famous Shark's Tooth Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch ("Climb high, sleep low"). Instead of descending south to Barranco, diverge north towards the quiet, secluded Moir Hut Camp nestled in the Lent Hills. This is the critical acclimatization day.
Climb moderately steep out of Moir Valley with an optional side trek up Lent Hills (4,375m). Traverse around the northern slopes of Kibo toward Buffalo Camp. Experience uncrowded wilderness with breathtaking views extending across the Kenyan plains. This is the least visited part of the mountain.
Continue traversing east across sparse alpine valleys and ridges on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Third Cave Camp where the Northern Circuit joins the traditional Rongai route. The terrain is rocky and barren with occasional views of the summit glaciers.
Steady uphill trek across the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Reach School Hut early in the afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare full gear for the midnight summit push. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you ascend.
Midnight wake-up and ascent through heavy scree to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Continue along the snowy rim to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa! After celebrating at the summit, descend to Barafu for a quick rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and sleep.
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Complete park exit formalities and collect official summit certificates. Transfer back to your lodge for a hot shower, cold drinks, and celebration with your fellow climbers.
Descend to Mweka Gate, transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your achievement!
