How to Join a Kilimanjaro Group Climb as a Solo Traveler

Why Solo Travelers Love Group Climbs on Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro as a solo traveler is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have — but it doesn't mean you have to climb alone. In fact, group climbs are the most popular way to summit Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. You'll share costs, meet incredible people from around the world, and have the safety net of a professional team guiding you every step of the way.

At Bush Lion Tours, we welcome solo travelers on every departure. Our groups typically range from 6 to 15 climbers, creating the perfect balance of social energy and personal space.

Step 1: Choose Your Route and Dates

Before joining a group, you need to decide which route and dates work best for you. We run group departures on all major Kilimanjaro routes:

  • Lemosho Route (7-8 days) — Best for acclimatization, 90%+ success rate
  • Machame Route (6-7 days) — Most scenic, great "hike high, sleep low" strategy
  • Marangu Route (5-6 days) — Hut accommodation, classic Coca-Cola Route
  • Northern Circuit (9 days) — Longest route, 98% success rate
  • Rongai Route (6-7 days) — Driest route, best during rainy season

Check our upcoming departure dates to find a group that matches your schedule.

Step 2: Book Your Spot with Just $100 Deposit

One of the biggest advantages of group climbs is the affordability. A solo private climb on Kilimanjaro can cost $3,000–$5,000 per person. With a group climb, you can join for as little as $1,850–$2,800 depending on the route and duration.

We require just a $100 deposit to secure your spot. The balance is due before your climb date. This makes it incredibly easy to commit to your Kilimanjaro adventure without a huge upfront investment.

Step 3: Prepare for the Climb

Once you've booked, here's what you need to do:

  • Training: Start hiking, running, or cycling at least 2-3 months before. Focus on cardio and leg strength.
  • Gear: We provide a detailed packing list. Most gear can be rented in Moshi if you don't want to buy everything.
  • Insurance: Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking coverage is mandatory.
  • Visa: Most nationalities can get a Tanzania visa on arrival ($50-100).

What to Expect on Day 1

On arrival in Moshi, you'll meet your group at the hotel. Your guide will do a thorough briefing, check your equipment, and answer any questions. This is where the magic begins — you'll quickly bond with your fellow climbers over shared excitement and a little nervous energy.

Our guides are experienced, certified professionals who have summited Kilimanjaro hundreds of times. They know every trail, every camp, and every trick to help you reach the top.

Is It Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Absolutely. Kilimanjaro is one of the safest trekking destinations in the world, and group climbs add an extra layer of security. Our groups often include solo female travelers, and our guides are trained to ensure everyone feels comfortable and supported throughout the journey.
