Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful and scenic trail up Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day itinerary starts from the pristine rainforest on the western slope and traverses the spectacular Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route for the final ascent. With a ~95% summit success rate, it offers the best balance of scenery, acclimatization, and achievement.

Unlike the more crowded southern routes, Lemosho begins in remote wilderness where you're likely to encounter colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and even elephant tracks. The early days on the Shira Plateau offer unmatched panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding glaciers — scenery that no other route can match.

Why Choose the 7-Day Lemosho Route

  • Most scenic route on Kilimanjaro — pristine rainforest to Shira Plateau
  • ~95% summit success rate — exceptional acclimatization profile
  • Fewer crowds on early days (western approach)
  • Lava Tower acclimatization (4,630m) — "Climb High, Sleep Low"
  • Famous Barranco Wall scramble — exciting non-technical rock climb
  • Wildlife encounters: colobus monkeys, bushbuck, tropical birds
  • Group joining from $2,050 — share the adventure with fellow trekkers

The Lemosho Experience

Starting from the Londorossi Gate on the western side, you'll trek through pristine montane rainforest alive with colobus monkeys and exotic birds. As you climb, the landscape transforms dramatically — crossing the massive Shira Ridge into the otherworldly moorland of the Shira Plateau, where giant groundsels and lobelias create an almost prehistoric atmosphere.

The acclimatization day at Lava Tower (4,630m) is critical — you ascend to the tower for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp following the "Climb High, Sleep Low" principle. The Barranco Wall scramble is the most exciting section, rewarding you with breathtaking views of the glaciers above.

Driving: 55km · 1 hr Hotel in Moshi
Day 1

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)

Registration at Londorossi Gate, then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. You begin your trek through lush pristine rainforest, where Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys are frequently spotted in the canopy. The trail winds through dense vegetation draped with moss and epiphytes. You climb steadily for 3-4 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, named after the ancient giant trees in the area.

6km 3-4 hours 2,100m → 2,820m Rainforest
Day 2

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

Today you leave the rainforest zone behind and trek across the massive Shira Ridge into the moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically — open grassy moorland with heather scattered with volcanic rock formations replaces the dense forest. As you traverse the Shira Plateau, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. You pass through Shira 1 Camp before continuing to Shira 2 Camp on the edge of the plateau.

16km 8-10 hours 2,820m → 3,850m Moorland / Plateau
Day 3

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) via Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This is the essential acclimatization day. You trek east towards the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic rock formation, with far-reaching panoramic views as you ascend into the climatic zone of the upland desert. You reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower for lunch — the high point for the day. In the afternoon, you make a steep descent into the scenic Barranco Valley, following the mountaineering code of "Climb High, Sleep Low" to aid acclimatization.

10km 6-8 hours 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,960m Alpine Desert
Day 4

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall scramble — a steep but non-technical rock climb requiring you to use your hands for balance. It's a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, you head towards the Karanga valley. For those feeling strong, there is an optional mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4,200m before descending back to camp.

5km 4-5 hours 3,960m → 3,995m Alpine Desert
Day 5

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

After a good night's rest and breakfast, you set off on your walk to Barafu camp at 4,673m. The climb will take you across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It's a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arrival at camp you eat and spend the afternoon resting as you prepare for the summit push. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, and the camp sits on a narrow ridge with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak.

4km 3-4 hours 3,995m → 4,673m Alpine Desert / Scree
Day 6

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Down to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

You wake at midnight and begin the summit push under a sky full of stars. The climb is steep and demanding — loose scree and cold temperatures test your endurance. After 5-6 hours you reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, where you witness a breathtaking African sunrise with spectacular ice cliffs within the crater. The final hour along the crater rim takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

17km total 11-15 hours 4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m Arctic Summit / Scree / Rainforest
Day 7

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) — Departure Day

Your final day is a pleasant descent through beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and takes you through lush vegetation back to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Here you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate — a proud memento of your achievement. Your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi where you can celebrate with your fellow climbers.
