Overview

The Marangu Route, affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route", is Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established trail. The 5-day version is the shortest and most budget-friendly way to reach the summit — ideal for fit trekkers seeking a quick adventure without camping in tents.

It is the only route offering comfortable A-frame hut accommodation — sleeping on mattresses in wooden cabins with beds at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts. This eliminates the need for camping equipment and provides shelter from rain, wind, and cold temperatures. However, because this itinerary omits the extra acclimatization day, hikers should be physically fit and well-prepared.

Why Choose the 5-Day Marangu Route

  • Shortest route — 5 days / 4 nights on the mountain
  • Most budget-friendly option on Kilimanjaro
  • Only route with hut accommodation — no camping needed
  • Well-established trail with facilities and infrastructure
  • Classic "Coca-Cola Route" — the most iconic Kilimanjaro path
  • Ideal for fit trekkers wanting a quick summit
  • Group joining from $1,550 — the cheapest Kilimanjaro climb

The Marangu Experience

Starting from the Marangu Gate on the southeastern side, you trek through dense tropical rainforest alive with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vibrant birdlife. The trail is well-maintained and relatively gentle — the most established path on the mountain. As you ascend, the landscape transitions through heath and moorland before reaching the stark alpine desert of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The hut accommodation is a unique feature — you'll sleep in A-frame wooden cabins with beds and mattresses at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts. This eliminates the need for camping equipment and provides shelter from rain, wind, and cold temperatures.
