Kilimanjaro Gear Checklist: What to Pack for a Group Climb
The Ultimate Kilimanjaro Packing List
Packing the right gear can make or break your Kilimanjaro experience. You'll go from tropical heat at the base to sub-zero temperatures at the summit — all in a single day. Here's our comprehensive checklist, tested by hundreds of successful summits.
Clothing (Layering System)
The key to Kilimanjaro is layering. You'll add and remove layers throughout the day as temperatures change.
Base Layers
- 2-3 moisture-wicking t-shirts (synthetic or merino wool)
- 2 long-sleeve base layer tops
- 2 base layer bottoms (leggings/thermal pants)
- 3-4 pairs of hiking socks (wool blend)
- 3-4 pairs of underwear (moisture-wicking)
Mid Layers
- 1 fleece jacket or pullover
- 1 insulated vest (optional but recommended)
- 1 softshell jacket
Outer Layers
- 1 waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or similar)
- 1 waterproof pants
- 1 down jacket (for summit night — temperatures can reach -20°C)
Headwear & Gloves
- 1 warm beanie/hat
- 1 sun hat or baseball cap
- 1 balaclava or buff
- 1 pair of liner gloves
- 1 pair of insulated gloves or mittens
Footwear
- 1 pair of broken-in trekking boots (waterproof, ankle support)
- 1 pair of camp shoes/sandals
- Gaiters (optional, useful for rainy season)
Gear & Equipment
- Backpack: 30-40L daypack for daily essentials
- Duffel bag: For porters to carry (max 15kg)
- Sleeping bag: Rated to -10°C (we provide these)
- Trekking poles: Highly recommended, especially for descent
- Headlamp: Essential for summit night (bring extra batteries)
- Water bottles: 2x 1L bottles or hydration bladder
- Sunglasses: UV protection, wraparound style
Accessories
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Quick-dry towel
- Camera or phone with power bank
- Earplugs (for hut nights on Marangu)
- Small first aid kit

Pro Tips from Our Guides
- Break in your boots — Wear them for at least 2-3 weeks before the climb
- Bring less than you think — Porters carry your bag, but weight limits apply
