Marangu Route 5-Day vs 6-Day: Is the Coca-Cola Route Easy?
The Marangu Route: Kilimanjaro's Classic Path
The Marangu Route, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route", is the oldest and most established path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It's historically significant as the route taken by Hans Meyer during the first successful Kilimanjaro summit in 1889.
Unlike all other routes on Kilimanjaro, the Marangu Route offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it appealing to climbers who prefer more comfort. However, the route has a lower success rate than other options — and that's where the 5-day vs 6-day decision becomes critical.
5-Day Marangu Route
The 5-day version is the fastest way to summit via Marangu, but it comes with significant trade-offs:
- Day 1: Arrive in Kilimanjaro, hotel transfer
- Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m) — 8.3km, 5-6 hours
- Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,700m) — 12.5km, 8-9 hours
- Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m) — 9.5km, 7-8 hours
- Day 5: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Horombo Hut — 22km, 12-15 hours
- Day 6: Descend to Marangu Gate, transfer to hotel
Success rate: 60% — This is the lowest of any route/duration combination.
Problem: No acclimatization day. You go from 3,700m to 4,700m in one day, which is too fast for many people.
6-Day Marangu Route
The 6-day version adds a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut:
- Day 1-3: Same as the 5-day version
- Day 4: Acclimatization day — trek to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) and back to Horombo Hut
- Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
- Day 6: Summit Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo Hut
- Day 7: Descend to Marangu Gate, transfer to hotel
Success rate: 80-85% — A dramatic improvement over the 5-day version.
Key benefit: The acclimatization day at Zebra Rocks gives your body time to adjust, significantly improving your chances of reaching the summit.
Is the Marangu Route Really the Easiest?
While the Marangu Route has the most gradual slopes and hut accommodation, it's not necessarily the easiest. The summit night is still demanding, and the 5-day version has the lowest success rate of any Kilimanjaro route. The "easiest" label is somewhat misleading — the route is more accessible due to huts, but the altitude challenge remains the same.
For the best chance of success, always choose the 6-day Marangu Route over the 5-day version. The extra day of acclimatization is worth every penny.
Marangu Route Hut Accommodation
The huts on the Marangu Route are basic wooden structures with bunk beds. They provide shelter but are not luxurious. Each hut has:
- Bunk beds with mattresses (bring a sleeping bag)
- Basic dining area
- Toilet facilities (very basic)
- No electricity (bring a headlamp)
The huts can be crowded during peak season. Our guides choose strategic timing to minimize encounters with other groups.
