Kilimanjaro First Aid: Safety Protocols for Group Climbs

Safety on Kilimanjaro: Our Commitment

At Bush Lion Tours, safety is not just a priority — it's our core value. Every guide is trained in high-altitude medicine, every climb carries comprehensive first aid equipment, and every descent follows strict safety protocols.

Medical Training

Our guides undergo rigorous medical training including:

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR): 70+ hour certification in backcountry medicine
  • High Altitude Medicine: Specialized training in AMS, HACE, and HAPE
  • CPR/AED: Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Annual refresher courses: Skills are regularly updated

First Aid Equipment

Every climb carries a comprehensive medical kit including:

  • Pulse oximeters (for measuring blood oxygen levels)
  • Supplemental oxygen tanks
  • Diamox (altitude sickness medication)
  • Ibuprofen and paracetamol
  • Dexamethasone (emergency use)
  • Wound care supplies (bandages, antiseptic, sutures)
  • Blister treatment
  • Rehydration salts
  • Emergency blankets

Daily Health Monitoring

Every morning and evening, our guides check each climber's vital signs:

  • Oxygen saturation (SpO2): Normal is 95-100%. Below 90% triggers action.
  • Pulse rate: Elevated heart rate can indicate altitude stress.
  • General assessment: Headache, nausea, appetite, energy level.

This data helps us identify problems early and take preventive action.

Common Medical Issues

Altitude Sickness (AMS)

The most common issue on Kilimanjaro. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Our guides follow the "stop, assess, descend if necessary" protocol.

Dehydration

At altitude, you lose moisture faster than you realize. Our guides monitor water intake and encourage regular hydration.

Blisters

Prevention is key. We recommend broken-in boots and moisture-wicking socks. Treatment includes moleskin, antiseptic, and bandaging.

Hypothermia

Cold temperatures at altitude can cause hypothermia. Our guides monitor for shivering, confusion, and coordination loss.

Emergency Procedures

Helicopter Evacuation

In severe cases, we arrange helicopter evacuation to hospital. This is why travel insurance with evacuation coverage is mandatory.

Porter Rescue

If a climber cannot continue, porters will assist them down the mountain. Our porters are trained in basic first aid and safe descent techniques.

Communication

Our guides carry satellite phones for emergency communication. We also have ground-to-ground radio communication between guide teams.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

The best way to handle medical issues is to prevent them:

  • Choose a route with good acclimatization (Lemosho or Northern Circuit)
  • Train adequately before the climb
  • Stay hydrated and eat well
  • Listen to your body and inform guides of any symptoms
  • Follow your guide's pace and instructions
